A Cross-sectional Study on Oral Health Literacy among 20s

Abstract
Oral health literacy is major determinant of oral health, and it is significant to understand oral health literacy among adults and its related factors. This study targeted 253 visitors to dental hygiene practice laboratory in dental hygiene department of C College of health located in a metropolitan city from February to June of 2013. REALD-66, a tool for linguistic oral health literacy, was used to investigate oral health literacy. The results of this study are as follows. 1. Words that were least comprehended were hypoplasia(10.7%), enamel(10.3%), cavity(8.3%), fistula(7.5), and apicectomy(4.8%), in the order of difficulty. 2. 50.6% of the subjects scored 0-44 (not enough or low), showing grade school level of literacy. 3. Predictors of oral health literacy were usage of oral hygiene products(p=0.020), and experience of oral health education(p=0.022). The results of this study reveal poor oral health literacy among adults and encourage creating opportunities for oral health education.
